Recently, we stumbled across this video from a popular show called “Adam Ruins Everything.” In this video, host Adam Conover takes a deeper look at the healthcare industry and explains why going to the hospital is so expensive. In true reference to the title, he does ruin everything.
Did you know that the price of healthcare is nearly arbitrary?
Conover points out in the first fifteen seconds of the video that America does not have the best healthcare in the world, but that we spend more money per person on healthcare annually than any other developed nation. Why?, you may ask. According to Conover, it’s because patients are being drastically overcharged.
You would be surprised what you’re paying for.
According to Conover, an IV bag, which costs the hospital less than one dollar, is being charged to the patient at over one hundred dollars. The same with a simple neck brace. Conover points out that this is the case with nearly every aspect of healthcare, even if you are insured. As insurance companies tighten which doctors and hospitals are in-network for their clients, it has become tougher and tougher to receive the care you need. For example, if you have a chronic condition, and want to see a specialist, they may not be covered by your insurance company if they are not in network. To get the best care possible, you would have to pay the difference for what your insurance doesn’t cover, which could be thousands of dollars.
Why is healthcare so expensive?
There is ample debate going on right now over the political implications of healthcare. If you take Adam Conover’s perspective on it, the politicians have been asking the wrong questions for years. They are trying to figure out how to cover the cost of highly inflated healthcare without getting to the bottom of why healthcare is so expensive in the first place. While we know that there will be an eventual solution to the current healthcare debate, at Idilus HR, we have come up with a new plan for dealing with the over-inflated cost of medical care.
These trends are not going to change any time soon.
At Idilus, we have found most of the things that Conover describes in the video to be true. Before we founded our PEO over twenty years ago, we worked in hospitals, helping them with human resources and increasing their bottom line. The upcharges were unbelievable. A simple procedure that cost the hospital around one hundred dollars would be marked up to the thousands and billed to the patient or their insurance. If people could not pay their bills, the hospital would have their wages garnished, even if it was a life or death situation. We began to feel that this relationship between the insurance companies and the health care providers was not just absurd, it was baseless and wrong, and also. If each individual hospital keeps its own private records of what each procedure, surgery, and alcohol swab costs, how will you ever know how much you are going to be charged at any given hospital on any given day?
Hospitals and Healthcare Systems are not going to take the initiative.
Hospitals and Health Systems don’t have any motivation to control the cost of healthcare. They know that you have to use them and profit greatly from ridiculously inflated charges. The Insurance Companies are happy to pay the inflated charges because they just bill you higher premiums for your insurance and keep a percentage as profit. The only person that loses is you.
